What sets Jane Iredale apart?

What Sets Jane Iredale Apart?

For over three decades, Jane Iredale has taken a fundamentally different approach to makeup — one rooted in skincare, ingredient integrity, and long-term skin health.

Long before “clean beauty” became a trend or marketing term, Jane Iredale was built on a simple belief:
makeup should be good for the skin, without compromising performance.

Today, we continue to lead the world of mineral makeup by focusing on what truly matters — thoughtful formulation, skin compatibility, and responsible choices.

Ingredient-First, From the Beginning

From the beginning, Jane Iredale formulations have been created without unnecessary fillers such as talc, parabens or phthalates, focusing instead on refined mineral pigments selected for performance and skin compatibility.

Rather than relying on bulk ingredients to add weight or opacity, our formulas are intentionally designed to prioritise:

  • performance

  • skin comfort

  • ingredient integrity

The result is makeup that delivers natural-looking coverage and long-lasting wear, without the need for heavy or occlusive fillers.

This ingredient-first philosophy has guided Jane Iredale for over 30 years — long before “clean beauty” became a recognised category.

Is Mineral Makeup “Natural”?

Mineral makeup is often assumed to be entirely natural, but the reality is more nuanced.

While minerals such as Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide originate from rocks, they require refinement after extraction to ensure purity and safety. Other pigments, including Iron Oxides and Mica, are frequently created in laboratories to avoid contamination risks found in nature.

For this reason, “clean” is a more accurate term than “natural.”
Clean makeup focuses on eliminating potentially irritating or unnecessary ingredients, rather than simply relying on origin alone.

Unlike some mineral powders that still contain talc, synthetic fragrance, parabens or other unwanted additives, Jane Iredale continues to prioritise purity, performance and skin compatibility.

Navigating Vegan and Non-Vegan Ingredients

Some makeup formulations include non-vegan ingredients such as beeswax or royal jelly, which function as binding agents and moisturisers, particularly in products like lipsticks and balms.

At Jane Iredale, the majority of our products are vegan. However, a small number do contain non-vegan ingredients where they provide clear functional benefits. We believe transparency is essential, and full ingredient information is always available for customers to make informed choices aligned with their values.

Navigating Sensitivities and Ethical Choices

Sensitivity is highly individual — and even naturally derived ingredients can cause reactions for some people.

We carefully assess ingredients that are commonly associated with irritation, including synthetic fragrance, talc, and ingredients credited as endocrine disruptors. However, certain natural ingredients also require consideration.

Carmine, for example, is a natural colourant derived from beetles. While effective, it may pose challenges for individuals with allergies, vegan preferences, or those observing kosher diets. For this reason, Jane Iredale has worked to minimise the use of carmine wherever possible, replacing it with approved insoluble dyes bonded to a calcium substrate.

This approach reflects our ongoing commitment to balancing performance, safety and inclusivity as better alternatives continue to evolve.

Wheat-Free Makeup and Inclusive Formulation

Wheat-free makeup plays an important role for individuals managing allergies, coeliac disease, dietary preferences, or ingredient sensitivities.

Formulating makeup without wheat presents challenges — from sourcing suitable alternatives to maintaining texture, performance and consistency. Despite this, Jane Iredale recognises the importance of offering inclusive options wherever possible.

While most Jane Iredale products are wheat-free, some do contain wheat-derived ingredients. Full ingredient information is available to support informed decision-making.

Trusted by Skin Professionals Worldwide

Jane Iredale is widely trusted by dermatologists, plastic surgeons and skin clinics around the world.

In many cases, Jane Iredale is one of the few makeup brands recommended for use on sensitised or post-procedure skin — when conventional makeup may interfere with healing or cause irritation.

This trust is built on consistent formulation standards, gentle performance and dependable results, allowing patients to return to daily life with confidence while supporting skin recovery.

Committed to Cruelty-Free and Ethical Practices

Jane Iredale products are never tested on animals, and we are proudly certified by the Leaping Bunny Program. In 2023, we were also listed on the NZAVS Cruelty-Free Guide.

This certification reflects rigorous standards, ongoing verification, and a commitment to ethical manufacturing practices — ensuring beauty without harm.

Eco-Conscious by Design

Beyond ingredients, Jane Iredale is committed to reducing environmental impact through:

  • responsible sourcing

  • conscious packaging decisions

  • environmentally mindful manufacturing processes

We continually consider how our actions affect animals, the environment and our community. Our gardens remain a source of inspiration, reminding us of our responsibility to protect bees, butterflies and birds that depend on thoughtful stewardship.

Why Jane Iredale?

Jane Iredale was created to answer one simple question:
Why can’t makeup be good for the skin?

More than 30 years later, that question continues to guide everything we do — creating makeup that delivers visible results while respecting skin health, ingredient integrity and ethical responsibility.
